Founded on philanthropy – built on partnerships

RMIT University was established on a culture of individual and collective giving when philanthropist Francis Ormond donated £5000 to establish the Working Men’s College in 1887. This sum was matched by the working people of Victoria via a Trades Hall Council levy and so the partnership between industry, philanthropy and the University was created at the same time as the Institution was born. This partnership continues to this day.

A range of scholarships, research projects, international collaborations and industry linkages exist solely due to the donations RMIT receives. Increasingly RMIT relies on external financial support to provide the excellent teaching and research that RMIT has become renowned for. These programs and initiatives are funded by private, corporate and philanthropic donations. They reflect the University’s goals to be internationally known for our applied focus and excellence in research and first choice provider of work relevant learning.

Whatever your motivation or desire, supporting RMIT is a statement of commitment, participation and partnership. It results in direct benefits to the institution, our students, staff, the community and you the donor.
